Make the message feel like you.
If your relationship is affectionate, a familiar family nickname can make the card feel close. If it is more reserved, a sincere ‘Thinking of you on your birthday’ is enough. You do not need to describe a perfect childhood or an ideal relationship to send a thoughtful greeting.
Choose a background she would enjoy looking at, whether that is a garden, a seaside view or a playful celebration scene. Pair a short card with a separate personal note about a favourite memory. Keep age jokes for someone you know will welcome them.
A few thoughtful examples
Happy birthday, Mom. I hope today makes room for the things that make you smile.
For your birthday, a little thank-you for every time you made time for me. Love you, Mom.
Happy birthday to my wonderful mom. I wish I could bring this hug in person.
Small personal touches
- Use Mom, Mum, Mama or the name you actually call her.
- Pick her favourite colours instead of assuming everything should be pink.
- Keep her birthday distinct from a general Mother’s Day message.
